Stephen DeGiulio's Santiniketan series of photographic images depicts open air classes and other scenes from the beautiful campus of the international university, Visva Bharati, founded in the early 20th century by Nobel Laureate (Literature) Rabindranath Tagore. Its idyllic setting is strikingly picturesque, with lush green trees, red soil, and a distinct architectural style that blends well its natural environment and features elements derived from the Indian Buddhist architectural traditions. Founded on the basis of the ancient Indian tradition of learning as a way of life, and to counteract the rigidity of the British colonial education in India at that time, this university has developed into a major center of learning, drawing students and scholars from all over Asia as well as rest of the world. In Santiniketan, Patha Bhavana students (school children) can still be seen studying in the shade of trees, literally free of the confines of a conventional classroom, as depicted in the image above. Tagore's educational philosophy emphasized freedom from unnecessary rigidity - in order to promote a healthy learning experience, especially for children.

Most of the images shown on this page are examples of digital interpretation of Stephen DeGiulio's photographs from his portfolio of images from Santiniketan, India. The rest of the images shown on this page were originally photographed by Dr. Gautam SenGupta.

Each of these archival quality images is digitally enhanced and printed in a limited edition using pigment based ink on specially treated watercolor paper, in collaboration with painter/printmaker, Sudeshna Sengupta. They are not commercial reproductions.

These very high resolution prints with rich colors and details are available in several sizes (the largest image size being 12"x18" and the smallest being 8"x 11" approximately), and are available fully framed, matted only, or unframed. They are available in sets or as individual pieces for exhibition and/or purchase.

We particularly welcome opportunities for showcasing this series in not-for-profit and educational settings and sharing the diverse nature of the subject matter of these images with a wide range of audiences.
